Our Story
Skaar has a rich history that dates back to 1915 when John Skaar senior founded Skaar & Co in Maløy. What began as a local fish trade evolved into one of Norway's largest exporters of salmon and trout.
Over the decades, the company has maintained a strong commitment to quality and innovation, growing from a small family business into a major player in the global seafood market. Today, Skaar Norway is headquartered in Florø, continuing our legacy of excellence and sustainability in seafood production.

The Beginning
The first Skaar company, Skaar & Co, was established in Måløy, Norway, by John Skaar Sr.
1915
Second Generation
Jon Skaar Jr. extended the export business.
1949
Expansion
Skaarfish acquired an old cold storage in Florø and rebuilt it to a packing plant for Salmon and Trout. The HQ was later moved to Florø.
1977
Largest Exporter
The Skaar Group became one of the biggest exporters of Norwegian Salmon and Trout in Norway.
1980-90s
Going International
Skaar International GmbH was founded by third generation owner, Helge Skaar.
1985
Changes
The Norwegian part of the company was sold to Norway Seafoods and Skaar Japan K.K was founded.
1995
New Generation
Skaar Norway AS, as we know it today, was established by Helge Skaar and Per Inge Tansø in Florø, Norway.
2004
Svanøy Havbruk
Skaar Norway AS and Per Inge Tansø acquired 42% of the aquaculture farm Svanøy Havbruk. Svanøy Havbruk had one farming license at this point.
2005
Skaar Norway AS
At Skaar Norway, we connect customers to independent fish farmers along Norway's coast, specializing in Norwegian salmon and trout. Headquartered in Florø, we export premium Norwegian salmon and trout to markets worldwide.
Svanøy Havbruk AS
Skaar Norway holds significant ownership in Svanøy Havbruk. With an annual capacity of 8-10 000 tonnes, Svanøy Havbruk produces trout from broodstock to fully grown fish. This partnership ensures top-quality trout products for global customers.
Skaar International GmbH
Our international branch, with locations in Hamburg and Rostock, sell a wide range of fish and fish products. Skaar International offers pelagic fish, white fish, and farmed fish to various markets from the center of Europe.

100 Years Of Seafood
Skaar celebrated its 100th anniversary at Svanøy Hovedgård, at Svanøy Island, outside Florø, Norway.
2015
Growing
Svanøy Havbruk increased to 6 aquaculture licenses for production of Norwegian Trout.
2021
National Trout Conference
Svanøy Havbruk held the first, second and third national trout conference in Norway, at Svanøy Island.
2018, 2022, 2024
Expanding
Skaar Norway AS opened office in Bergen in addition to HQ in Florø.

In partnership with Svanøy Havbruk, we control the entire value chain of our rainbow trout production. From broodstock and roe to smolt and fully grown fish, Svanøy Havbruk, located in Kinn and Askvoll municipality, ensures top-quality produce with an annual capacity of 8-10 000 tonnes.
